Learn more about BMI
Body Mass Index is a decades-old screening tool that divides weight by the square of height. It is cheap, fast, and reproducible — which is why clinicians and epidemiologists still use it.
It is also an imperfect measure. BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat, does not account for frame size, sex, age, ethnicity, or body composition, and may mislead for athletes, the elderly, pregnant people, and those of very tall or short stature.
Treat this number as one data point — not a diagnosis. For a full picture of metabolic health, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
